A gold color metal and enamel device 1 3/16 inches (3.02 cm) in height overall consisting of a background of three rays, scarlet, gold and scarlet issuing from a gold masoned wall, surmounted in center by a vertical black cannon barrel bearing in base a gold annulet, flanked by a smaller vertical black cannon barrel slanting outward and charged in base with a gold fleur-de-lis, all enclosed within a continuous scarlet four folded scroll inscribed at the top BIG GUNS and in base ARE READY, all in gold letters.
Scarlet and yellow (gold) are colors used for Artillery. The three cannon barrels symbolize the Groups fire power and battle honors Meuse-Argonne, Champagne 1918, World War I, and service in Vietnam. The masoned wall refers historically to the parent unit organized in 1917 at Fort Adams, Rhode Island as a coast artillery unit.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 25 May 1971. It was rescinded on 29 July 1975.
